Popular Culture and Intercultural Communication
Popular culture is the cultural products that are made by the low culture, and most of the people share it and know it. Including the TV, music and movies(Intercultural Communication in Contexts| Judith N. Martin|Thomas K.Nakayama| P.361). According to it’s definition, the popular culture is the generally way to know about other cultures. People will learn other cultures or gather information by watching TV, movies, or reading newspapers.
For looking the popular culture through the dialectics, the popular culture has it’s positives and negatives. Popular culture is playing the bridge for intercultural communication. People don’t need to go to the place for visiting the cultures and studying it. People can share the popular culture to understand each others. Popular culture is removing the barrier between the cultures and cultures. For example, if I never been to England, and I have no idea about the English, then I can read the book that write by English and watch the movie like Harry Potter. I can know much of the England from the books and movies.
The negatives are the popular culture is produced by the powerful cultures. It will value other cultures by their own values, and create stereotypes. Sometimes, the popular culture has offensive views to other cultures and it will bring the preconception to other culture. We have many movies that made by Hollywood about Africans. They always play bad guys in the movies, and the movies always talk about their poverty.
The popular culture is the basic, low culture, it is free to take and learn. People should have their own values before accept the popular culture’s values. Popular culture is the way to know a culture, but it is not the way to judge other cultures. Take you want with you from popular culture, but never bring it to other who doesn’t like it.
You shed light on both the positive and negative aspects of popular culture. Nice example. Good job!
