Reflection on Pop Culture

First off, I would like to make a note that Rikki and Audrey did a wonderful job of explaining what Popular Culture is and they really attacked it from each angle.  I now have an understanding of what Pop Culture is.  I am really intrigued with this topic and I think that the thing that got my attention during the presentation was the video about all the Indian mascots.  I understand how tribes can feel like they are being offended but in my eyes I think that mascots don’t mean anything.  Mascots are simply something that distinguishes teams from each other and gives the team a name.  I feel as if they are never intended to point out a group especially Indians in the Redskins case.  The name Redskins sounds a little edgy but in no way was it intended to put down Indians in my opinion.

I also think that it is extremely interesting how the United States has so much power in the media world.  Media has so much to do with our views on any country and when we don’t see anything positive on a specific country it makes us look like brats.  It makes other countries look at us and have them think we are almost too good for them.  I don’t like having that negative perception on us but it makes sense why other countries would because we have bad views of everything around the world.  Chapter 9 was extremely interesting in my eyes and I thought the discussion today was extremely successful.

P.S. for some reason my indent is weird and confusing on this website hints why the first paragraph isn't indented. :)

  1. Good job! I am not surprised you don't like the negative perceptions some people from other cultures have of USA. But it is not all negative. Some cultural communities look up the American/Western culture and try to follow suit. I agree, Rikki and Audrey' presentation helped us understand pop culture better.
