Reflection #4
Professor Getachew Godana
There are so many ways to learn and conceive different cultures without personal experience. Which, I believe the power of popular culture deeply influence our life. We can easily conceive the information from the media such as the news, movies, TV shows, advertisements, and more.
It is always interesting to know there are many ways for people get to know each other in intercultural communication. For example. the popular culture in the United States give everyone in the world have chance to know the country better. Even other country celebrity exemplifies the non U.S. popular culture with a big impact internationally to the world. This is one of the best way for people know other country’s culture.
It is always good to have popular culture from foreign countries, however, too much of popular culture from certain country may become media imperialism. A certain popular culture deeply influence the whole country, which sometimes is not a good thing for import the foreign pop culture, because people will just keep follow those things and forgot what they originally have. For example, South Korean actor Bae Young Joon with his all time famous soap opera was a big wave over the world 12 years ago. People start watching South Korea series. Not saying is a bad thing to love K-Pop culture, but I personally think if you want to know other pop culture, before that, you should also know your country's pop culture well.
To sum up, It is always a good idea to have foreign pop culture, which you get to know more country’s culture. In addition, it is people's choice to choose what they want to follow in terms for pop culture. Everyone have its right to choose what they want to know better.

Good job at explaining the relationship between U.S. pop culture and other foreign pop cultures. I like the point you make that it is good to take in pop culture from parts of the world that are different than you own, but that it is first important to understand and be in touch with you own pop culture. You have inspired me to look into South Korean pop culture! Maybe I will have to watch the series you spoke of. Very interesting perspective!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Audrey you explained how helpful popular culture could be in leaning about other cultures. I thought it was very nice of you to also point out consuming too much popular culture of a certain area (like the USA) might result in cultural imperialism. I think the example you gave from South Korea was good.
