The Friend from Africa
Africa is a mysterious world for me. All I know about Africa is endless grassland and abundant wildlife. I know about Africa too little and sample. Until I had a conversion with a girl who from Angola, I found out that Africa has too many unknown story and culture for me.
The first topic that we used to begin our conversion was about food culture. I from China and the food we have that has many different kinds of style, and the differences are depend on the area. In the north of China , people like to eat salty food and vinegar. In the south of China, people more like Spicy food. The names of the style of food is depend on area. For example, the style that comes from Sichuan is called Chuan-style. But in the comparison of Chinese food and Angola tradition food, their food is simpler than ours. They have a kind of food named KIZAKA.
People eat it much often, and most Angolans love it. Another kind of food is called FUNGE. The Funge is made by tapioca, and Funge is no taste. Angolans have to eat it with other soups and vegetable, like KIZAKA.
The Angolans have two famous drinks called Gisangua and Maluvw. The Gisangua is made by corn and sugar, and Maluvw is made by Gisangua. The interesting thing is the Maluvw is alcohol, and Gisangua is Maluvw’s puree. Maluvw test like bear and people sell it on the street everyday. Gisangua and Maluvw are the daily drink in Angola.
The next topic was wedding, it also is the most important part of Angolans life. Their Wedding is traditional, they have their rules have to be respected. Before the wedding, the man have to gave the thing that woman’s family needed. The woman’s family would give man a list that has everything they needed and man have to buy them all to the woman’s family. What if man miss one thing in the list? He will be penalized by woman’s family. The most interesting part is the man have to bring much money to woman’s home, and he have to use those money make a road that go though woman’s house, and walk on it to the woman.
When we finish the conversation, the Angola friend had talked a little about her life in her country, her country was full of poor and hunger. She longs for Americans life style but she have to pay more than others hard work to achieve that. I wish she can make it happened.
(My Africa partner: Coelho da Sliva Virginia| From Angola)
Food is a big part of culture which is often overlooked. I am glad you showed us differences in the popular meals in China (Both Northern and Southern) and Angola. From the picture and description, I think I know the food in Angola. It is popular in many countries in African even if it goes by different names. I thought spending the dowry money to build a road is a very interesting one.
